It’s October 1940, you are an engineer in Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force and need to suggest new placement for an additional layer of armor for the next generation planes to be produced. You conduct an analysis on the remaining planes (remember this is near the conclusion of the Battle of Britain) and find a pattern, the returning planes tend to have many bullet holes in the top and bottom. This suggests at the very least the Luftwaffe fighters attacked from the top and bottom of the bombers. Where should you add these additional layers of armor?

Will post answer in comment section!

  1. The answer is you place armor anywhere else except the top and bottom. This sample shows heavy survivorship bias; The fact that these planes survived while sustaining heavy damage on those areas seems to say that those shot down must have been hit in other areas.
